When we think of yoga or surf retreats, most of us will instantly think about Bali and Costa Rica first. And for a good reason, these paradise destinations have earned their many years of popularity among tropical paradise lovers. The downside? Popular destinations also come with crowds, expensive bookings, a lack of locals to interact with, and often long waits for availability, or none at all.
Luckily, since early 2022, the north of Nicaragua has been welcoming new travel, yoga, and surf lovers to a magical hidden gem called Still Salty Escape. This hotel opens its doors to yoga retreats, yoga teacher trainings, surf retreats and even weddings, all year long. With a venue that’s prepared for nothing other than empowerment, mindfulness and spiritual awakening alongside fellow dreamers’ souls just like you and us.
How can I visit Still Salty Escape?

Why do I need to be in Nicaragua asap?
Yoga retreats in Nicaragua mean that you’re slowing down, rather than speeding up. Nicaragua's yoga retreats are a place to come alive within the elements, swim in the ocean every day, and take long barefoot walks by the warm Pacific Ocean.
Sound appealing? Yeah, we thought so. That’s exactly what drew founders Kayla Nielsen and her wife, Alix Tucker, to this magical country years ago, where they fell in love and found this common dream.
Kayla is an internationally recognized yoga teacher who has been leading yoga retreats all around the world, and Alix is a finance executive who has always had a dream to retire and open up a bed and breakfast somewhere remote in the world. And guess what - the stars aligned for this inspiring couple –luckily for us!
Following a full year of building on a raw piece of land in rural Nicaragua, the pair opened Still Salty Escape on January 1, 2022. Since then, they have been hosting a variety of retreats and yoga teacher trainings with guests from all around the world.
But it’s not all about weather and mesmerizing scenery, Nicaragua yoga retreats are known for the incredible surrounding nature, whether that’s on the Pacific or the Caribbean side. Whether the yoga retreat is on the shore, or in the mountains. Not to mention the wide variety of birds, hypnotizing wildlife, and marine life!
But animals are not the only lovable part of this country, that’s for sure! When you get the chance to experience this still not-overcrowded paradise, you’ll fall in love with the locals too. Nicaraguan people are amazing, to say the least. They’re kind, generous, and gentle by nature, and the perfect guides to enjoy and respectfully admire this breathtaking landscape.
That’s why for Kayla and Alix it was –and still is!– imperative to build structures alongside existing trees and wild plants. “Anything we were forced to clear was recycled into making our furniture. Any dead trees were donated to local families for firewood, or ground into sawdust for our compost systems. We have a solar system in place to harness the energy from the sun (which comes in handy during power outages), and we also recycle all grey water.”, explains Kayla.
We don’t know about you, but we’re already looking into which retreats we can join this year because who doesn’t need a paradise like this to connect with ourselves, nature, other amazing humans and the beautiful people of Nicaragua?
