Emily in Paris

Who said Emily in Paris isn’t every woman’s dream?

This Netflix show is about an American woman who travels to Paris to fulfil a dream. On the way, she experiences friendship, love, a new country, a new culture and of course a new boss who is a devil wearing Prada. The reference here is intended. Emily in Paris is an adventure that makes one laugh and cry simultaneously.

It sounds like the natural way of life – a mixture of happiness and sadness, travelling, good friends and some crazy experiences. Yet, there are still controversial opinions about Emily in Paris ranging from the mistreatment of women to failing some of the most important characters throughout the show and the way in which Paris and fashion are represented in the show. Yet, despite these negative reviews, the series has been renewed for two more seasons with the third season expected to drop at the end of 2022. You may wonder why. Season two was released two days before Christmas and was among the TOP 10 of Netflix’s most viewed shows. Fun fact about the series, 77% of the viewership of season two was female! But let’s not bother too much with unnecessary data and dive into why you should watch Emily in Paris.

First, and foremost, if you turn out to be a Sex and the City lover, then you will surely like the tone and the characters of this show. After watching a few episodes, you will immediately start connecting the dots and finding similarities between Emily Cooper (Lily Collins) and Carrie Bradshaw. However, the resemblances could be attributed to a couple of factors and the first of which is Darren Star. Yes, the creator of the Sex and the City is part of the production team of Emily in Paris. Additionally, another thing you may find fascinating about the production is the person behind the costumes of the show, Patricia Field. Yes, you read correctly. A true Sex and The City fan will recognise her name but if not, she was the main designer of the show and responsible for so many of Carrie’s famous outfits. She was also the costume designer for the Devil Wears Prada. So you can imagine what to expect from the fashion for Emily in Paris.

Emily Cooper is a young rising star in her field of marketing who gets a promotion to move to Paris as a representative of a company that has just acquired a firm in France. She is sent there short-term to represent the company's interest in place of her boss (and close friend) who is pregnant and unable to travel. Emily is this charming, solution finder who always manages to wreak havoc on her workplace.

Emily in Paris is a funny story full of emotions, following the adventures, failures, and relationships that the main character establishes in the trip of her life. As the title of the series suggests, Emily Cooper moves to Paris. Yes, the city of love, the city of fashion, the city of amazing food. A dream that has come true. Yet, life there isn’t as perfect as it might seem at first glance. Emily experiences love triangles and friendship hardships, she has to establish herself in a new company amongst new people who she has never met before and with a massive language barrier.

While the first season explores the culture shock and culture clash between Paris and America, the second season focuses on the personal development of Emily, her growth and her emotional progression. Emily even manages to win over the people she meets at the PR company, Savoir, thanks to her good-faith efforts and charm. During Emily’s journey of personal growth, she experiences a few love interests and there's a pinch of cringe to the show whenever Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) shows up.

Personally, I’ve always wanted to visit Paris but after watching the show, my passion for the food, the streets and the fashion started burning even more. Never have I ever wanted to be in a place where a show was shot. Yes, this is the vibe of Emily in Paris.

Even if you have prejudice about the show, it is worth giving it a try because believe me, the cast and the story will grow on you. You will most likely fall in love with any single character, adore the friendships Emily develops and even enjoy the presence of Sylvie, the straight-talking boss, who at first sight comes across as the villain of the show.

To sum up, Emily in Paris is а very cute and light-hearted show with a chic wardrobe and amazing setting. It’s an easy-to-watch, binge-worthy show to recommend to anybody who wants some positive vibes thanks to Emily’s sparkling personality and positive outlook on life.
