Budapest

"Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities I've visited".

Just writing about this city brings back immense desires to travel without destination and without planning anything. Undoubtedly Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities I've visited. Not only for its countless places to visit, but it's also an ideal destination for those who do not want to spend a lot of money.

I remember having paid accommodation in the same Hostel chains up to almost 3 times cheaper than other capitals of Europe.

To understand a little how the city works and organise your trip, I'll tell you a bit about it. The Hungarian capital is divided by the Danube River into 2 main areas: Buda and Pest.

"The Hungarian capital is divided by the Danube River into 2 main areas: Buda and Pest"

Buda is where the city was born. There is the medieval quarter, and you can find some of the most exciting tourist attractions such as the Budapest Castle or the Fisherman's Bastion.

Pest, on the other hand, is the most modern and commercial area, but you will also find plenty of history, such as the great Parliament of Budapest.

The big question when I got there, where do I stay? There are so many options, with attractions set up everywhere around the city, so it can even be a bit confusing at the beginning.

The city is divided into districts. The most central and recommendable in my opinion are District I (Varnegyed) in the Buda part; and the Districts V (Belváros and Lipótváros) and VI (Terézváros), in Pest.

I stayed in Belváros near the Central Market and loved it. I found it to be a safe area from where I could walk everywhere without any problems.

Let's start in Pest!

As soon as I arrived, I was starving and needed a hearty meal after long hours on the bus. So what better than going straight to the Central Market Hall to enjoy the typical and well known Hungarian dish: Goulash Soup. It is served at a very cheap price and with several places to choose from.

In the colourful market, you can also browse the various stalls selling traditional Hungarian food and souvenirs.

On foot, you can walk through the city centre and pass by St. Stephen's Basilica. This church reaches 96 meters high, being the highest point of the city next to the Parliament, renowned for its history and the beautiful 360º panoramic view of the city when you climb the tower. I didn't do it, but it sure is worth it!

From there, you can walk down to the Danube River and walk along its banks. It has an incredible view of the other side of Buda city.

On the way, you will curiously find a Shoe Monument in memory of the Jews who were killed in the '40s on the banks of the river. It alludes to the fact that they only took a bath and always returned, leaving their shoes there in place.

A few meters from there is the Parliament of Budapest, powerful and wonderful! It is one of the largest parliaments in Europe, and its incredible architecture will leave you in awe for a long time.

I recommend you to cross to Buda and appreciate its beauty at sunset from the opposite side, with the Parliament fully illuminated. I assure you that you will want to come back.

Finally, if you want to end a day with something to drink and have a good time with friends or meet people, ruin bars are very well known in Budapest. All with a very attractive alternative style.

The oldest is the Szimpla Kert, a spacious place with striking decor. Never stop looking at the ceiling; I assure you that you will have a great time!

"...It is surrounded by nature, beautiful gardens, ruins and the largest water fountain in Hungary".

It's the turn of Buda, a dream!

This will be a long day so put on your best sneakers to walk comfortably and quietly.

You can start by climbing the Gellért Hill, located 220 meters high. It has a beautiful path on a colourful autumn morning to reach the Citadella, where you will have an incredible view of Pest. At the top, there is also a market with handicrafts and the occasional stall for a beer.

After your morning in this beautiful place, you can continue walking towards the famous Buda Castle. I recommend you to walk the hill; I don't know how to describe it. I just remember that every corner has its charm and you will spend hours in those wonderful places.

I hope you have had a good break there with a delicious meal. From there, you will reach the Fisherman's Bastion. It's a very romantic viewpoint with terraces that give you a breathtaking view of the opposite side.

Here you can return to watch the sunset towards the Parliament and finish crossing to Pest by the famous Chain Bridge. It's a symbol of the capital and will give you beautiful postcard memories to cherish.

Located in the middle of the city, between Buda and Pest, there is a beautiful island called Margaret Island. If you have time, leave a whole day to visit it, as it is pretty big and you'll enjoy being disconnected from the city for a bit.

You can rent a bike or just walk around. It is surrounded by nature, beautiful gardens, ruins and the largest water fountain in Hungary, which holds a mesmerizing light show every hour. Ideal to relax and recharge your energy during your trip.

Coffee fact! As a good coffee lover, I always look for a place to start my morning with energy. In Pest, I found the perfect spot: Café Madal. A specialty coffee shop where you can drink top quality brewed coffee.

Whenever I go to places like this, I always take my time to stop and meditate. Sitting on the grass, writing in my notebook and giving thanks are part of my journey.

They are sacred moments that allow me to connect with myself, know what I like and appreciate the moments I am living.

A big hug from the heart to all travellers!
