Over 10 years ago, Canada saw the first beeswax food wrap come to life. A cotton sheet coated with wax that turned out to be perfect to keep all your food safe and without the need for single-use products. An item which is also biodegradable and compostable!

One of the brands that came out of this sustainable discovery is Hunnybee by Trifecta Living Co. A Vancouver-born start-up that managed to add color and easy-to-love designs to its products, bringing to life what you can now find as HunnyBee beeswax food wrap.

Why do I need a beeswax food wrap?

If you haven’t had the chance to try out this eco-friendly kitchen bestie and are unsure if you need it. Let us take a step back and go through our storage and leftovers routine at home.

For most of us, every time we cook, especially when we’re on the go or on holiday, chances are we won’t manage to perfectly calculate the portions and time we would have to put into each meal.

Here’s when leftovers start piling up in our fridge, packed in a lot of unnecessary plastic containers, most of which will be complicated to wash, will absorb all smells, and some might even be used only once. Surely there’s no need to explain where the problem lies here.

Sadly enough, this unappealing storage system will commonly be solved by either throwing away perfectly good food or getting single-use plastic containers, none of which are good for our beloved planet earth, nor our food-loving tummy. So, we started searching for a better system for this very common problem that you can experience at home, camping and on the go. We knew there must be a better way to deal with it.

In that process, we bumped into a very unexpected storage alternative. A colorful and gorgeous cotton sheet that is somehow sealed with beeswax and allows you to store all your leftovers, without the waste, smells and washing, for an unnecessarily long time.

A brighter and happier kitchen

We love food! We all do and you know it. So, forgive us if our heart breaks when after making a magical veggie bolognese sauce or our beloved vegan empanadas, we realize there’s no good way to store the leftovers for the next day or share it with our loved ones.

We won’t name names but fridges have been seen with plates covering other plates -broken dishes might have been found after this attempt. We can say now that it’s not the best solution and we really want to avoid buying plastic containers for everything.

Funnily enough, there’s another reason that got us on this search for a better solution than a plate system. This might be a quirk, but there’s something about having a fully colored kitchen and fridge that simply puts a smile on our faces. So, in an attempt to attack two problems with one solution we decided to give the beeswax food wraps a try.

We have to admit that it took us a bit of time to find one that was not entirely beige or grey, or simply one that has a pattern we would love to see every day. But we did! Now pineapples, stars, beautiful animal patterns, honeycomb, avocado and vintage-drawn veggies are coloring our fridges while keeping our delights safe. And oh! We love it! We recommend Hunnybee’s set of 7 wraps named Pineapple, Cactus and Stars which come in 3 different sizes.

Another anecdote is that their veggie medley pattern was actually designed to promote eating more veggies and consume less meat. Two crusades we love to be a part of. If you do want to store meat or fish, it’s not recommended to use it directly on meat products, so make sure you cover it first.

HunnyBees’ wraps are made of GOTS-certified organic cotton, USDA-certified organic beeswax, jojoba oil, and natural tree resin.

How to care for my Beeswax food wrap?

We do know that a wax-sealed cloth might sound complicated to wash or store, but surprisingly enough it’s pretty simple. Here are 3 tips to keep in mind to make the best of your food wraps:

1. Wraps can be washed in cold water

This might be one of our favorite perks of our busy-bee lives. Simply put them under the tap, scrubbing them by hand gently to remove any food stains. It’s important to avoid hot water because it is wax after all, which means that heat and direct sunlight, will melt the wax sealing. So don’t leave them near the hob either!

2. Prefer mild soap

You want to avoid harsh chemicals when washing your beloved wraps as it could damage the coating.

3. Let it hang!

After washing them, simply hang them on the drying rack to let them dry.

Can I keep them forever?

Sadly enough, these colorful wonders are not infinite. But following the caring tips above will definitely make its life span last from 6 months to a year.

When it’s time to let them go, it’s recommended to bury them in a garden without hesitation as they are eco-friendly, compostable, and bio-degradable.

Fun fact!

They can also be used as fire starters. Once their reusable life has been completed, use them to get the campfire or your stove going.
